| 1297 | The Barnards of Ancient Windsor, Connecticut, which also included the present towns of East Windsor, South Windsor, Bloomfield, Windsor Locks, and Ellington, are descended from Joseph Barnard, Jr., a grandson of Francis. From Ancient Windsor these descendants have spread out through much of Hartford County, and to other Connecticut localities and other states. (1681 -- 1736), per William Asher Barnard (1681 - ), per Ruth Emily Barnard (20 June 1681 Hadley, Hampshire Co., MA -- Dec. 1736 Windsor, Hartford Co., CT; interred at Windsor), per Edward Stilson Barnard (20 June 1681 Hadley, MA -- 1736), per Edward Carleton Barnard (20 June 1681 - ), per FTM WFT Ped. #4509 Vol. 7 (20 June 1681 - ), per Dwight, Vol. 2, p. 1465, and per Sheldon, A History of Deerfield, MA, II, p. 65 (20 June 1681 - ), per Jones, Matt Bushnell, 1909, History of the Town of Waitsfield, Vermont: George E. Littlefield, Boston, MA, p. 221 Joseph Barnard (20 June 1681 - ), removed to Windsor, per Boltwood, L. M., Genealogies of Hadley Families, p. 9, in Judd, Sylvester, 1905, History of Hadley: H. R. Huntting & Co., Springfield, MA Joseph Jr. married Abigail Griswold (1685 -- 1747 Windsor, Hartford Co., CT), daughter of Edward Griswold and Abigail Williams, on 4 Oct. 1705 at Hartford, CT, per Edward Stilson Barnard Joseph married Abigail Griswold ( - ), per Sheldon, A History of Deerfield, MA, II, p. 66, and per FTM WFT Ped. #4509 Vol. 7 (20 June 1681 - ), per Sheldon, A History of Deerfield, MA, II, p. 65, per FTM WFT Ped. #4509 Vol. 7, and per Dwight, Vol. 2, p. 1465 (20 June 1681 Deerfield, Franklin, MA -- 12 July 1736 Windsor, CT), per Strong Family History Update, Vol. III, p. 445 Joseph Barnard, s. of Jos. and Sarah, born June 20, 1681, per Vital Records of Deerfield, Massachusetts, to the Year 1850, page 26, compiled by Thomas W. Baldwin, A.B., S.B., member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, Boston,Mass., 1920, reproduced in Early Vital Records of Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire Counties, Massachusetts to about 1850, Search & ReSearch Publ. Corp., Wheat Ridge, CO Inasmuch as Joseph Barnard, Sr. was among the 79 individuals taxed at Hadley in 1681 for building Fort River Bridge (Judd, p. 203), it is likely that he was in Hadley when Joseph Jr. was born 20 June that year--WMB Cordwainer; settled at Windsor, CT, per Sheldon, A History of Deerfield, MA, II, p. 66 Joseph Barnard, Jr., of Windsor, was the son of Joseph of Hadley/Deerfield and Sarah Strong. He was born 28 June 1681, per Evans (20 June 1681in Deerfield, MA, per William Asher Barnard). Prior to obtaining lineages constructed by David Evans, Ed Barnard, and WAB, who all identify this son of Joseph of Hadley/Deerfield as the individual who married Abigail Griswold, WMB had already argued that Joseph of Windsor was the son of Joseph of Deerfield: It is the logical connectionof the Windsor Barnards with Francis of Hadley through Francis' son Joseph and the latter's wife being from Windsor. Joseph would have been 24 years old (if born 1681) when he married Abigail Griswold in 1705. Also, it is reasonable that Joseph of Windsor named his first daughter Abigail after his own wife, and his second daughter after his mother Sarah (and sister). His first son, Joseph, was probably named both for himself and his father, while his son Francis was named after his grandfather Francis (d. 1698). (The other sons of Francis are ruled out as potential fathers of Joseph of Windsor: Francis' son Thomas had two sons, Thomas and John; Francis' son Samuel had one son, Samuel; and Francis' son John died without issue). Stiles, II, p. 58, refers to him as Joseph ("Sgt.") Barnard [prob. The "Lieut. Joseph" that d. 12 July1736]; WAB and dockhouse@compuserve.com list Joseph as deceased in Windsor on same date. Sgt. Joseph Barnard, Jr. (20 June 1681 Deerfield, Franklin, MA -- 12 July 1736 Windham, CT) married 4 Oct. 1705 Windsor, Abigail Griswold, d/o Edward and Abigail (Williams) Griswold, b. Aug 3, 1685 Westfield, Hampden, MA, d. 1747 Windsor---per SFAA Joseph married Abigail Griswold ( - ), per Sheldon, A History of Deerfield, MA, II, p. 66; married 1705, per Sheldon, AHistory of Deerfield, MA, II, Appendix, p. 397 Joseph married Abigail Griswold (3 Aug. 1685 Westfield, Hampden, MA -- 1747 Windsor, CT), daughter of Edward and Abigail (Williams) Griswold, 4 Oct. 1705 Windsor, CT, per Strong Family History Update, Vol. III, p. 445 Joseph Barnard married Abigaell Griswold, both of Windsor, Oct. 4, 1705, per Windsor Vital Records, v. 2, p. 127 (Barbour Collection) Abigail Griswold (d. 1747), of Windsor, married Joseph Barnard on 4 Oct. 1705, per Stiles, II, p. 58, and WAB. She was born 3 Aug. 1685 at Westfield, MA, and died 1746/47 at Windsor, CT, per goofball...; ESB gives life span as (1685 -- 1747). Just when Abigail and Joseph, son of Joseph of Hadley/Deerfield, emigrated to Windsor is not presently known. See Appendix C for information on the Griswolds. | BARNARD, Joseph (I28)

Francis married Lucretia Pinney (17 Jan. 1722 -- 1805), daughter of Nathaniel Pinney III and Elizabeth Carrier, about 1740 per Edward Stilson Barnard; in 1740 per William Asher Barnard Francis married 1740, Lucretia Pinney, b. Jan. 17, 1722/23, d. Feb. 16, 1805, Simsbury, s/o Nathaniel Pinney and Elizabeth Carrier, per SFAA There appears to be a problem with some birth dates. Stiles, II, p. 58, gives only six months between the birth of Sarah in Sept. 1707 and Joseph in March 1708. Goofball... gives firm dates for Sarah as 23 Sept. 1707 and Edward as 9 Sept. 1709, and squeezes in Joseph III as 16 March 1708/09, where it would appear that he could not be accommodated---too manychildren in too short time. This all suggests that some of the "firm" dates are not so firm. Francis Barnard (9 Sept. 1719 - ), per Stiles, II, p. 59; Stiles II, p. 59 refers to Francis as the son of Joseph, and notes that this Francis probably removed to Simsbury Francis Barnard (9 Sept. 1719 Windsor, CT -- 1789 in Simsbury, CT), per William Asher Barnard Francis Barnard (9 Sept. 1719 Windsor, CT -- 22 Feb. 1789 Simsbury; interred in Simsbury), per Edward Stilson Barnard Francis Barnard (d. 21 Feb. 1789), per Stebbins, p. 24 Francis Barnard (19 Sept. 1719 -- 11 Feb. 1789 in Simsbury), per SSWR, p. 40 Deacon Francis Barnard (9 Sept. 1719 Windsor, CT -- 1789 Simsbury, CT), per Strong Family History Update, Vol. III, p. 445 "Deacon Francis Barnard d. 2/22/1789 in 70(th) year of his age of a malignant fever. Lucretia, his wife, d. 2/16/1805 in the 83(rd) yr. of her age. Wid. Lydia King (? Wing) died quik the face part of October, 1835."---From Ebenezer Barnard's Bible Record, per notes of Eileen B. Phelps Francis was a member in full of the First Church of Christ (Congregational), Simsbury, at the time of the ordination ofRev. Samuel Stebbins, 9 Dec. 1777, per Stebbins, p. 12 Thomas Bidwell, age 16, chose Francis Barnard of Windsor to be his guardian in 1755. In 1756 Jehiel Bidwell also becamehis ward. There were children of Thomas Bidwell and Ruhomab (Pinney) Bidwell of New Hartford. Manwaring, Vol. III, p. 501, 502, per notes of Eileen B. Phelps Distribution of Francis' Estate -- 12 Mar. 1789. To Sons Francis, Aaron, David, Moses, Samuel, Ebenezer, Elihu; heirs of Lucretia Pinney, to Lydia Wing, Irena Wilcox, Eliz. Phelps, to Sarah, dau. of Matilda Nettleton.---per notes of EileenB. Phelps [THE WORDING "SARAH, DAU. OF MATILDA NETTLETON" LOOKS SUSPICIOUS: THE DISTRIBUTION AS WORDED DOESN'T MENTION HIS OWN DAUGHTER SARAH, AND TO MY KNOWLEDGE CAROLINE MATILDA DIDN'T HAVE A DAUGHTER SARAH---WMB] Francis married Lucretia Pinney, daughter of Nathaniel Pinney III and Elizabeth Carrier, in 1740 per Edward Stilson Barnard. Stiles, II, p. 59 does not list name of Francis' wife, but elsewhere identifies daughter Elizabeth as daughter of Francis and Lucretia (p. 576), and it is logical that Lucretia, first daughter of Francis and Lucretia, would be named after her mother. Phelps Lucretia Barnard's will written 23 Dec. 1790. Dated March 1805 in Simsbury. Bequeaths estate (personal effects, furniture, etc.) to daughters Lydia Wing, Irana Willcox, Elizabeth Phelps, Sarah Wakefield, Carolina Matilda Nettleton. Named son-in-law Daniel Phelps of Colebrook, Executor. Inventory presented 20 Mar. 1805. She was "reclict of Deacon Francis Barnard." Estate was distributed 12 Sept. 1805 to Widow Lydia Wing; Irana Willcocks, wife of Aaron; Elizabeth Phelps, wife of Daniel; Sarah Wakefield, wife of Pottershield (? sp.) Wakefield; Caroline Matilda Nettleton, wife of Roger.---per notes of Eileen B. Phelps See Appendix D for more information on the Pinneys Francis Joseph "Deacon" Barnard (1719-1789) married Lucretia Pinney (1722-1805) in 1740 [names and dates per William Asher Barnard and ESB]. Francis moved to Simsbury at an unknown date and occupied a house built in 1760 at 174 Duncaster Road in what is now the outskirts of Bloomfield, or Wintonbury as it was first called, which was created from the towns of Windsor, Farmington, and Simsbury (hence its name). A sign on the front of the house for many years read: "From this house went forth sevensons to fight in the American Revolution". The house, in poor condition, was razed in 1989 and the lot made into a mini-park; a bronze plaque naming the seven sons was emplaced there by the Wintonbury Historical Society. | BARNARD, Francis (I70)

The detailed information of Evans posted on the Internet lists three marriages for Francis, rather than two, with son Joseph born to the first wife, and other children to the second; it omits Ebenezer, son of Joseph (d. 1695); and it expands on the lineage of John, son of Joseph (d. 1695). Evans's data are consistent with, and more extensive than, those provided on the Internet's Ancestry.com website for information submitted by jplittle@bellsouth.net. | BARNARD, Thomas (I16)
