Mary S. (Merritt) Barnard BARNARD, Mary S. (Merritt) Mary S. (Merritt) Barnard, 89, died Friday, (January 2, 2004) in Bloomfield after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. She was the wife of Philip J. Merritt for 31 years until his death in 1971. Afterward she was the wife of Leon Barnard for 26 years until his death in the year 2000. She is survived byher children, Polly M. O'Leary of Framingham, MA, Michael P. Merritt of Sandgate, VT, Susan M. Robertson of West Falmouth, MA and W.R. Tucker Merritt of Mansfield. She leaves six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Barnard wasborn Bertha Mary Skeats in Pittsfield, MA and later moved with her family to New Jersey. After attending college in Bryn Mawr, she moved to Hartford where she met Philip "Pete" Merritt, the man who was to become her first husband, while they were working on disaster relief victims of the 1938 hurricane. From then on,she lived in the Hartford area. Mrs. Barnard dedicated her life to her family, her neighborhood, and her community. She was a scholar of the Christian religion. She was Deacon at Westminster Church in West Hartford in the 1950's, skiing to church when the roads were otherwise impassable. She was a member of Asylum Hill Congregational Church when she died. She volunteered for Planned Parenthood through her membership in the Junior League of Hartford. She was also a member of the Town and Country Club and the HartfordGolf Club. She loved to make things useful. She loved to make things go. She built her son, Tuck, a small, aerodynamic plywood car around a Briggs and Stratton lawnmower engine. Tuck and his sister, Sue each drove it to deliver newspapers, accumulating a pack of neighborhood dogs as they went. Once she completed 28 days of darning to repair 28 pairs of her husband's socks. She hosted 200 people a year at Christmas carol sings in her home. One room was devoted to singing, another to eating and gingerbread men hung on strings all over the house for the taking. The children ran around among the grown-ups' legs, hid under the tablecloths, sang or threw snowballs outside. The following are excerpts from the Hartford Courant editorial written about Mrs. Barnard's mother-in-law, Alice Pattison Merritt, at her death in 1950. It evoked Alice Merritt's legacy then, and evokes Mary Barnard's now: "There are some who appear to have been touched by a magic wand before entering this planet...Such people go through life seemingly unaware of the qualities that make them a littlemore gracious, a little more understanding, a little kindlier, and a great deal more effective than the rest of us in their dealings with other people...If you were to recount all her accomplishments...they would still not add up to Mrs. Merritt...If you will study these activities...you will get a sure key to her character, namely a selfless service to hercommunity...She was a successful wife, mother and grandmother. She was successful in every other way that a useful human being can be...Gracious and good was her life. Gracious and good her memory." To know Mrs. Barnard was to know the original, sensitive, competent caring woman she was, since it was by these qualities that she was defined and, by them, we remember her. She was delightful, intelligent, charming and asked after by friends for whom she had done services, both small and monumental. She was charitable and thoroughly Christian. She valued integrity and community and delighted in her work. She expressed simple gratitude for her gifts, feeling that she only held them in custody while they endured. Mary Barnard was loving and principled and service is her legacy. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, January 7 at 11a.m. at the chapel of Asylum Hill Congregational Church, 814 Asylum Ave., Hartford. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 136 South Main St., West Hartford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary's name to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 710 West 168thSt., New York, NY 10032. --published in the Hartford Courant on 1/4/2004

The Second National Bank. This institution had its origin in the banking house of Barney, Hubbard & Durbin, which was in turn succeeded by the firm of Hubbard & Co., also private bankers, to whose business reference has been heretofore made. The latter firm was in business from May, 1863, until January, 1864, when the Second National Bank of Sandusky openedits doors for business.

Pauline Hull's obiturary states that she was the wife of Selah A. Hull, a Meriden stock broker and that she had 2 living brothers - George M. Phelps of Hartford and John Phelps of Simsbury. She died in Stony Creek, CT (on the shore)

Selah owned his own investment company. The Meriden directories, starting in 1890, show that George W. worked for him.

I know that the Fairchild/Hull's at one time owned property in Stony Creek.

I know that my mom and aunt took boat rides with the Phelps family

A rootsweb.com auto-biography of John Wesley Phelps states that Hector Fayette Phelps and Roxanna S. Barnard were the parents of Mary Paulina, born 4/13/1838, wife of "Selah A. Hall" of Meriden, George M., John W., and Hector Fayette (presumably Jr.)

I know that Roy Fairchild's family moved in with George and Louise on Broad St. I believe they had lived in Wallingfordfor awhile. I even remember the Broad St. house, because I lived in it for 6 months while going to 1st grade there. -- per Barbara Bourn, e-mail to WMB 9/27/2007

"... there was another "Hull" family (Louisa C., her son John R. and wife Edith who lived on Broad St. (334) from at least 1880 - 1930 (according to census and Meriden directories). It appears sometime around 1929 John R. and Edith moved in with Louise M. Hull (275 Broad St.) The 3 of them were about the same age; I know the stock market crash caused havoc with the family. What is weird about that 1930 census was that it showed John R. to be the head of household at the 275 address. Clearly that was not the case! John R. died 12/29/1930. My mom, her sister and parents moved from Wallingford into 275 Broad St. around 1931 and lived there until the 50's..."-- per Barbara Bourn, e-mail to WMB 9/28/2007

Received from Barbara Bourn, e-mail to WMB 5 Nov. 2008:

On our trip to CT & RI in Sept. we visited with my Aunt in Meriden. The topic of "family" came up and she told us that her grandmother -- Louise M. Hull, daughter of Selah Hull and Pauline Phelps -- told her at a young age that she, Louise, was adopted. Considering all the work I had done on the Hull/Phelps genealogy, I decided to delve into it more.

A researched in CT discovered for me the following births/deaths to Selah and Pauline:

Meriden Births:

3:76 - A son, born 27 Aug 1864 to Selah A. and Mary P. Hull, both 25, white and living in Meriden. Dad was a clerk. J. Tait, M.D.

3:97 - A son, born 4 May 1866 to Selah A. and Pauline M. Hull, both 27, white and living in Meriden. Dad was a merchant. N. Nickerson, M.D.

6:50 - Kate S. born 24 Oct 1871 to Selah A. and Pauline Phelps, both 33, Dad was born in Meriden and Mom was born in Simsbury. Both parents were white and living in Meriden. She was listed as the 5th child. Dad was a livery stable keeper. N. Nickerson, M.D.

6:278 - Pauline born 26 Jan 1877 to Selah A. and Pauline Phelps, both 38, Dad was born in Meriden and Mom was born in Simsbury. Both parents were white and living in Meriden. She was listed as the 4th child. Dad was a clerk. N. Nickerson, M.D.

Meriden Deaths:

8-160 - Pauline Hull, 8 months and 15 days died 10 Oct 1877 of diarrhea. She was the daughter of Selah and Pauline Hull.

The Meriden clerk's office told me (from Louise's death records) that her date of birth was Oct. 26, 1865. Prior to getting the clerk's DOB, I had documented that she was born in Oct., 1865 from some other source, which of course I don't have now. Her obituary says she died at the age of 87. The researcher found no females born in Meriden on that date and assuming the date is correct, it is rather biologically impossible to have given birth to Louise in Oct. and have anotherchild the following May.

'Findagrave.com' shows the grave records of Ethan Phelps Hull born May, 1866 and buried in East Cemetery; Mary Pauline and Selah are both buried in Walnut Grove, as is Louise. I wasn't able to find burial sites for the son born in 1864, Kate, or Pauline.

According to Selah's obituary, he had several jobs, including the livery stable keeper, and elected to the town clerk'soffice. In later years he owned an investment firm, so all the above facts are correct.

Additional from Barbara Bourn, e-mail to WMB 6 Nov. 2008:

8:40 - Katie Hull, 10 month old female, died on 20 Aug 1872 of Diarrhea. She was the daughter of Selah Hull. N. Nickerson, M.D.

Meriden Marriages:

7:222 - Louise M. Hull, 19 year old female, married George W. Fairchild, 21 year old male. He was born in Meriden. She is listed as born in Collinsville (part of Canton). They were married on 6 Oct 1885, both were white and living in Meriden. Reverend Alfred H. Hall. Registrar Selah A. Hull.

Pauline's older sister, Emma, was living in Canton at that time. Emma also had a baby boy, Walter, born "abt. 1864" (per your records). 1860 census shows a clergyman living in the area too (presuming the census was listed by homes). Perhaps there was an adoption arranged by one of the above.
