On 15 June 1998 Sylvia Irene Barnard (b. 19 Apr. 1905), granddaughter of Walter M. Barnard, affirmed that her great-grandfather's name was James. WMB had already argued that James Harvey was the father of Walter based on the following considerations:
Walter is interred, along with his wife, two daughters, son Samuel, and grandson Wesley P. (?), in the same "family" plot as are James Harvey, his wife Clarrisa, and sons James Jr. and John at Mountain View Cemetery, Bloomfield, and there are no other Barnards in this plot.
James Harvey Barnard Sr.'s memorial stone also lists Clarissa, James Jr., and John---all who preceeded Walter in death by a minimum of six years; Walter probably arranged for, or finalized, that stone and purchased adjacent lots for himself and his family.
The 1840 census gives one male 15<20 yr., one male 20<30 yr., one male 50<60 (James, Sr.), one female 10<15 yr., one female 30<40 yr., and one female 50<60 yr. (Clarissa); early in 1840 John would have been 20 yr. (but possibly the one listed as <20 yr.), and Walter, 22 yr. It is further reasonable that a child was born between James Jr. and John (about four years apart), and it wasn't one of the two younger females noted in census.
It is reasonable that Walter named his oldest son James after his own father James, who had died two years earlier, andWalter's deceased brother James Jr., and uncle. Walter's second son was George Harvey (Harvey after James Harvey) and third son Samuel Walter (Samuel after Walter's grandfather Samuel, and Walter, after himself).
Further evidence linking James Harvey Barnard with son Walter is found in History and Genealogy of the Gov. John Webster Family of Connecticut, by William Holcomb Webster and Rev. Melville Reuben Webster, 1915, p. 526, which specifically states that Sarah Ann Webster married Walter Munroe Barnard, son of "Harvey" [James Harvey Barnard]
