      Walter served in the United States Navy. The following details are taken from his original certificate of honorable discharge (B9194 Series B): Walter Monroe Barnard enlisted as Apprentice Seaman for Shipwright on 26 November 1919 at New Haven, Connecticut for two years. Born 13 September 1900 at West Hartford, Connecticut. He held the ratings of AS -- Swgt[Apprentice Seaman -- Shipwright], Sea. 2c [Seaman 2nd class], C. M. 3c [Carpenter's Mate 3rd class], and C. M. 2c [Carpenter's Mate 2nd class]. Service (vessels and stations served on): Naval Training Station, Hampton Roads, Va., November26 1919 to 24 May 1921; U.S.S. BEAVER 24 MAY 1921 to date of discharge, 25 November 1922. Recommended for reenlistment as C.M. 2c. Character of service excellent, final average 3.4. Physical characteristics listed as 5 ft. 7 in. height; 146 lbs. Weight, lt. Blue eyes, auburn hair, ruddy complexion. Personal marks listed a birthmark and tattoo, right arm, Japanese girl 'Cavite, P. I.', RFA [right forearm] eagle, dragon, 'Manila, P.I. 1921'. Monthly rate of pay when dischargedwas seventy two ($72) dollars. Furnished transportation at the rate of .05 cents [sic.] per mile from Portsmouth, N. H.to New Haven, Conn. FLORENCE (WHEELER) BARNARD BENNETT BENNETT. Florence (Wheeler) Barnard Bennett, 82, of Matianuck Avenue, Windsor, died Saturday (March 30, 1996) at Mount Sinai Hospital. Born in Suncook, NH, she lived in Windsor most of all her life, and had been a member of Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall, Windsor congregation of SouthWindsor. She leaves her husband, Clifford Bennett; three sons, Walther Barnard of Fredonia, NY, Arthur Barnard of Scranton, PA, and Samuel Edward Barnard of Windsor; three daughters, Arlene Parlapiano of Enfield, Patricia Ogozaly of Carbondale, PA, and Louise Hamilton of Windsor; two sisters, Edith Mayrand of Windsor, and Bessie Friss of Hartford; 26 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, Walter M. Barnard; a sister, Marion Schinnelly, and two brothers, Alonzo and Sylvester Wheeler. The funeral will be Tuesday, 11 a.m., at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Bloomfield. Her family will receive friends today, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home. Contributions may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, P.O. Box 574, Glastonbury 06033.
