This Samuel has children born in both Windsor and Simsbury, and there are no records of Samuel Barnards, other than theson of Francis, of this date in Ancient Windsor. The Connecticut 1790 Federal Census (first census of the United States), Simsbury, CT, p. 462, lists Samuel and brothers Ebenezer and Francis Jr. as the three heads of Barnard households in Simsbury; none are listed for Windsor. Samuel's first child (Samuel, Jr.) was born in July 1773, so it is reasonable that he married in 1772 (or 12 Jan. 1773, per SSWR) at age 23 years, if he were Francis' son born in 1749.---WMB

During the Revolutionary War desertionwas commonplace because food, clothing, footware, and ammunition were often in short supply.
