Abner BARNARD, Self, male, widowed, white, 80 years of age, born CT, Occ: Retired Farmer, father born CT, mother born CT, 1880 federal census, Guilford, Medina, Ohio, FHL Film 1255047 National Archives Film T9-1047, Page 258B, per FamilySearch 1880 United States Census and National Index
The following, from Family Tree Maker CD #450, County and Family Histories: Ohio, 1780-1970, Disk 3, Medina County, Biographical Sketches, p. 685-686, possibly confuses Abner 2 with his older brother Abner 1 (21 Jan. 1775 -- 14 July 1795, per SSWR, p. 44), giving a birth date of 3 Nov. 1779 for Abner 2, and then listing a first son, Abner, born 3 Nov. 1799,which is actually the birthdate of Abner 2 himself, and two decades prior to Abner's marriage to Diana. The second listed "child" of Abner 2, Diana, is apparently the wife of Abner 2. This is further evidenced by the fact that the account mentions that Abner "embarked his family, consisting of a crippled daughter and a little boy of less than 2 years of age, on the steamboat Enterprise, for Cleveland", where this daughter and son are Mary W., born in Connecticut 31 Dec. 1822, and James E., born in Connecticut 22 Aug. 1825:
Abner Barnard, son of Capt. Samuel [Samuel served in the American Revolution, but not as a captain---WMB] and Roxana Barnard, was born in the town of Simsbury, Scotland Parish, Hartford Co., Conn., Nov. 3, 1779 [this is Abner 2, born Nov. 3, 1799, per SSWR, p. 44---WMB]; he married Diana, daughter of Thomas and Sylvia Blanchard, of Windsor, Poquonock Parish, Hartford Co., Conn., Feb. 22, 1820, and left his native State for the Reserve on May 10, 1827; journeying in wagons toAlbany, he took the canal-boat there to Buffalo, where he embarked his family, consisting of a crippled daughter and a little boy of less than 2 years of age, on the steamboat Enterprise, for Cleveland. Arriving at a point three miles fromthat city, the captain of the vessel refused to go farther---it is said, because of some previous misunderstanding withthe officials of the city---and the passengers were obliged to trust themselves to the open boats. These, ladened down nearly to the gunwale, in the darkness of the night, made their tedious way to what was then the hamlet of Cleveland, the passengers touching the water when resting their hands on the sides of the boats. Fortunately, the passage from the steamboat was made without accident, and the little family came with teams from from Cleveland, on the old pike, to a point on this road in Guilford Township, nearly a mile north of the village of Seville, settling on what is known as the Martin farm. Of the children, Abner was born in Connecticut Nov. 3, 1799 [This is actually Abner 2, the 14th child of Samuel and Roxanna Barnard, and father of the following children---WMB]; Diana was born in Connecticut Feb. 15, ---, deceasedAug. 26, 1877 [This is probably Abner's wife---WMB]; Mary W. was born in Connecticut Dec. 31, 1822, deceased May 6, 1850; James E. was born in Connecticut Aug. 22, 1825; Samuel G. was born in Ohio April 4, 1828; Albert G. was born in Ohio Oct. 14, 1831; Charles H. was born in Ohio Sept. 12. 1826, deceased April 4, 1852; Hercelia M. was born in Ohio April 25, 1842.
