Milk Driver Killed In Strange Crash: Irwin H. Barnard, 43, of 45 Echo St., Manchester, died Tuesday following a freak accident in which his milk delivery truck suddenly swerved to the right and struck a fire hydrant and a wire fence on NewPark Ave. about noon. He was thrown from the vehicle and died as he was being admitted to Hartford Hospital. According to police, Barnard, a route driver for Bryant and Chapman, was proceeding north on New Park Ave. at 11:15 a. m. at approximately 35 miles per hour, when his vehicle suddenly jumped the curb. He was in a standing position and was first thrown against the windshield and then from the vehicle itself, to a spot about 30 feet away. He died in the municipal ambulance at 11:30 a. m. Medical Examiner H. J. Onderdonk said death was caused by a fractured skull. Police said the truck was loaded with empty milk bottles and that Barnard had failed to fasten two safety bars holding the cases in position in the rear of the truck. When the accident occurred, the entire contents slid forward and smashed against the dashboard. The left front tire of the truck was blown out, but police said this was caused by shock of the impact against the curb. Barnard was born in Hartford and lived in Manchester the last 16 years. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Maude E. Robb Barnard; two daughters, Janet and Judith Barnard, all of Manchester; four sisters, Mrs. James Howard, Mrs. Harry Katz, Mrs. Russell Cooper and Mrs. Anthony D'Amato, all of Harford, and three brothers, LeRoy Barnard of East Hartford, Walter Barnard of Windsor and Ernest Walters of Hartford. --pub. 9/2/46 [apparently from the Hartford Times].
